Rain Garden Planning and Installation
RAIN GARDEN [October 2014]
Creation of a rain garden on school grounds: The school facilitated the creation of a rain garden on the grounds to absorb run-off from the parking lot. Ten students were involved in the planting process on Oct. 24 2014, where they received outdoor educational lessons about stormwater run-off and habitat. Educational lessons included demonstration rain garden substrate displayed in a clear plastic container, with a drainage point at the bottom – students poured dirty water into the bottle, and saw how the substrate filtered & cleaned the water so that it was clear by the time it drained out of the bottom. We connected that concept to a rain garden, and how it filters out polluted stormwater run-off.

LITTER REMOVAL AND READING CIRCLE REFURBISH: [October 2014]
Scholars of Franklin Square Elementary Middle School and Enterprise Car Rental came together to clean up litter, and removal of dead wood to the reading circle. Scholars learned the importance of what litter does to our habitat. The removal of wood from the reading circle helped them to understand the required maintenance that needs to happen to wood in open spaces. The scholars also learned that the wood can be re-purposed and one the many uses including being turned into mulch.
